FOURTEENTH INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF HUMOUR AND SATIRE IN THE ARTS - GABROVO '99

The Fourteenth International Biennial of Humour and Satire in the Arts - Gabrovo '99 is a contest recognizing the highest achievements of contemporary humour and satire in the field of cartoons, graphics and photography.
The Biennial motto is THE WORLD LASTS BECAUSE IT LAUGHS.
This competition is open to all artists who accept the conditions of entry. The working languages are Bulgarian and English. In case of disagreement on the exactness of the text, the Bulgarian text is the valid one. The decisions of the jury are final.
 

The Ministry of Culture, Gabrovo Town Council, OPEN SOCIETY Club in Gabrovo, the HUMOUR OF THE PEOPLES International Foundation and the House of Humour and Satire.
The Biennial opens on May 15, 1999, 10.00 a.m., at the House of Humour and Satire. The exhibitions run until September 30, 1999. The works remain at the disposal of the House of Humour and Satire until December 31, 1999.
Deadline for receipt of all submissions - March 1, 1999.

The Biennial is comprised of 3 sections:
I. CARTOONS
II.HUMOROUS OR SATIRICAL GRAPHICS
III.HUMOROUS PHOTOGRAPHS
 

1. The entry fee is $25 for each artist.
2. Only originals executed over the last two years will be accepted; all art works should be entrants' property; the artist has complete freedom of choice in subject matter and technique.
3. Maximum sizes: CARTOONS - 35 x 50 cm; GRAPHICS - 50 x 70 cm; PHOTOGRAPHS - 30 x 40 cm
4. Each artist may submit a total of 5 entries for each competition, but no more than 2 works will be selected for exhibition.
5. Each work should be accompanied by: an entry form completed in block capital letters in one of the working languages, photos of the entries to be used in the catalogue, and a copy of receipt of payment. The artist's name, title of the work, section type and selling price should be specified on the back of each entry.
6. Unless notified to the contrary, all entries except the prize-winners will be assumed to be for sale. For each work sold the House of Humour and Satire deducts a 25% commission from the selling price.
7. All CARTOONS, GRAPHICS and PHOTOGRAPHS, except the sold ones, remain at the House of Humour and Satire. Only entries where TO BE RETURNED is signified on the entry form or on the back of the work itself, and the sum of $20 has been deposited to the account stated in item 9 will be returned.
8. All entries should be posted as printed matter and should be frameless and unmounted.The organizers assume no responsibility for works sent in another manner.

- CHEQUES ARE NOT ACCEPTED
10. Each entrant will be notified of the receipt of his works, the selection jury's decisions and the purchases made.
11. The House of Humour and Satire guarantees the safety of the works from the date of receipt to the date of return. No responsibility is assumed for damage or loss during transit, and entrants are advised to arrange for insurance during these periods.
12. The House of Humour and Satire reserves the right to reproduce the works on display and to have them printed in its publications, as well as to show them in exhibitions in this contry and abroad. If an entrant disagrees with this, he should indicate it on the entry form.
13. The House of Humour and Satire publishes an album-catalogue of the works selected to be shown. Artists may have the catalogue for $35 payable according to item 9.
14. The House of Humour and Satire will gratefully accept donations. An artist who wishes to donate his works should state his donor's will completing and signing the Certificate of Donation.
Artists who were selected for the exhibitions and who wish to donate their works to the House of Humour and Satire are entitled to a free copy of the catalogue.
15. A jury of distinguished artists and former Biennial winners selects the works for the exhibition and awards the following prizes:

GRAND PRIX - the GOLDEN AESOP statuette, a certificate and an invitation to stage a one-man show during Biennial 2001.
PRIZE of the town of GABROVO - the GASCAR statuette and a certificate
PRIZE of the HUMOUR OF THE PEOPLES International Foundation - the SILVER PELICAN statuette and a certificate.
 
 

PRIZE of the Lions Club of Baden/Helenental, Austria - 5,000 Sch - awarded to a young Bulgarian graphic artist (up to 30 yrs)
PRIZE of FOMUS Ltd., Sofia, general distributor for KODAK in Bulgaria - a one-man show at PHOTO-VACATION '99. The prize goes to the funniest photo printed on KODAK paper.

16. The prize winning works remain in the HUMOUR OF THE PEOPLES collection of the House of Humour and Satire.
